Cats, they say, are lucky. What with their night time vision and riding on broomsticks and their nine lives.
So it follows that the birth of a cat, therefore, would be a fortuitous affair.
And so it is.
We celebrated the Birth of a Cat two nights ago, as the sun set along the river in this frenzied city, and we lit the bridges with our fire and the smoke of us spiralled out of view. And some people stayed dancing til the early hours of the new morning, when the river twinkled a different hue of violet from the night before (because each day is different), and the peace of their merriment swallowed others whole, so that they became immobile, and sank languidly to their rest.
There were balloons, and champagne, and chocolates strewn about (I strew some of the chocolates myself, actually) and the people on the docks below shaded their eyes with their hands and watched us dance.
For a moment, it was our city, and we owned it whole, and everything and everyone in it.
The moment passed, and the new day dawned (as it will) and we moved on, with our pockets full of numbers and hope, and our heads groggy, and the taste of salt and sweet nothings on our tongues.
We were enriched, from a night of debauchery. It is the case with humanity that this can sometimes occur.
Anna Funder also told me, today, that studies show that depressed people actually have a firmer grasp of reality, and a more accurate view of the 'real world'. Although the usefulness of this, if it makes a person depressed, is debatable.
So a peacefulness then, is what I seem to have found to align my lost equilibrium. Not happiness (happiness is like a diamond; rare and expensive and glittery so that it shoots light off into many different directions) and not emptiness (I know that feeling all too well, and would recognise it in a heartbeat) but a peacefulness, so that for a few moments I am suspended in a bubble, separate, and contained.
Oh, and look at that. Chris Martin appears to agree with me. He sings his words to me now. The Birth of a Cat indeed. ;)

Ah peacefulness is a splendid emotion, a rarity but when it comes you can remember it for an eternity.
Cats are lucky, i think Martin is-he has to be crazy though-to put up with me-but we have an understanding of sorts.
Chris Martin-oh how i love him, listen to 'the scientist' or 'fix you' they will change your soul..
Do you know what Maddie said to me the other day? We were in the car (my knuckles were white from the gripping - Maddie is not the best of drivers)(and THAT is an understatement) and she rolled down her window and announced,
'I hate Coldplay.'
My soul gave a shudder, at that. To hate Coldplay! What must have damaged your heart so? Viva La Vida? It is a song of drama! Of character! Of grand scale and operatic symphony!
I truly sometimes wonder how people can change so, til they are hardly recognisable.
'I hate Coldplay?!' is this woman insane?
In the next breath she will be saying how she hates Snow Patrol-as you know they are like my favourite band EVER.
Do not let such flippant comments discourage you-Maddie obviously does not appreciate how the lyrics and notes of a good song can change your inner soul..
